Football tournament with nearly 200 teams
Lyari has been through tough times in the past in terms of violence and is one of the most underprivileged areas of Karachi. Many civil organizations have been working here for the past few years, especially in terms of education, sports and other healthy activities, so that its juvenile energy can be steered in the right direction. One such organization with a vision to spread a positive message about Lyari is Hyderi Baloch Football Club, one of the oldest clubs of Karachi, based in Nawabad.
Recently, the club organized a mega football tournament in Lyari involving 190 teams and registered clubs from all five districts of Karachi. The event was a tribute to Waja Sheh Abdul Gani Baloch, who was the lifetime patron-in-chief of Hyderi Baloch Football Club. He was the intellectual voice of the region, having many books to his name and was assassinated in Lyari in 2003. The tournament was a well-received event and many people from all walks of life were engaged in this including the media, thus acquiring a healthy coverage. The mega event was entirely funded through donations of various communities, whereas the event was free-of-cost for the general public.
